It's not that we broke up, although that was the easiest way to explain our hiatus and experimenting, more like we wanted to try new things and break out of the whole "post hardcore" thing.
First we wrote a bunch of new songs, then we experimented with band names and ideas like: my mom's a werewolf, yellow knife, yell at birds, some of us moved away 3000 k/m to further experiment musically and with life, but in the end, we have put so much work and time into Jakartah and this new album: "Measure twice, cut once" that it could not be stopped.

2011 will see the follow up to "In The Nervous Lights Of Coincidence" come out. We will also be launching an official website. We're recording the vocals for the album in May at Raincity Recorders with Stuart McKillop. Stay tuned for more details as they arise. To quote my good friend Wes Cook... Dang. Coincidence was seemingly released to little notice in 2008, and that's quite a bummer in itself, as fans of '90s post-hardcore would definitely dig this. The Vancouver act recalls signifiers like Jawbox, Drive Like Jehu and the more tempered Unwound stuff. Their vocals being a sort of restrained shout with a touch of reverb on them, it's a good establishing front for back-and-forth but rigid guitar work, like the lumbering guitars of "Liaisons at the Woodward Building." The bass stands out with some more distinct lines in "Rosa Linda Drank Anxiety" and the drifting measures of "A Thousand Miles Connects You to Me," but the most powerful rhythm that comes is the compelling groove that pervades closer "Tomorrow's on an Antique Wall." Granted, this album has a linear path that's almost too so. The dynamics aren't pronounced to their full abilities, but the band do excel in drumming up grizzly, rugged stop-starts and heavy, angular turns in cuts like "A Dire and Ever Circling Ghost" and "Hawaii Burns at Sunrise"--although, really, the band utilizes this method in just about every track. Some of the band's members have since moved onto a newer project where they say it progresses past the standard post-hardcore template. They've already done a hell of a job with this subgenre, so you've gotta think whatever's next will tackle another style quite well and be worth looking into. Not too long after Jakartah sent me their most recent full-length release, In the Nervous Light of Coincidence, for review, they decided to call it quits. It's easy to see why their categorization is such a guessing game -- on their debut album, Jakartah experiment with blending bottom-heavy post metal bass and dual riffage, intentionally sloppy post-hardcore vocal melodies and enough effortless time changes to keep your inner emo kid on his toes, and usually, they do it all in one song.

On higihlight track " A Young Boy Forgets About Heaven, " there's even a borderline pretty breakdown, and if it wasn't for the brooding minor key bed, these guys might have encountered some impulse Explosions in the Sky namedrops too. Some future self-editing could come in handy for the unnecessarily droning bits but in the meantime, Jakartah have produced an intriguing and, even with its potentially distracting smorgasbord of sounds, memorable debut. Except this time they added "Oh, it's dirty" the instrumental version.

This is the 3 song EP that originally got the attention of Torque and Victory Records. We never properly released it. It was recorded by Stuart McKillop and assisted by Max Slade.

Sea Section told us this EP needed to be out! It needed to be documented and so it goes... Now it lives forever. This features Marc Stonestreet on vocals, Erik Neilsen on bass, Drew Christie on drums, and Richard Fudalewski on guitars --as seen in this photo. Enjoy.

Sea Section Records

JAKARTAH - Monumental Defeatest All Burn Alive EP

Acoustic Fireworks releases our debut CD - in Europe [FREE/DIGITAL]

The amazing Nils & Sophia of Acoustic Fireworks have released "In The Nervous Lights Of Coincidence" in Europe - free digitally. The album name is, quite clearly, a nod to Circle Takes The Square's song "In The Nervous Light of Sunday" from their screamo masterpiece "As The Roots Undo", though the musical style itself is quite different. "In The Nervous Light of Coincidence" has actually been sitting on my playlist for quite some time, basically because they play a style of post-hardcore I can't really claim to be all that familiar with, and it's taken me time - and plenty of listens - to really get to grips with it. It's clearly influenced by the indie, punk and progressive side of things, so it's definitely interesting, but in no way straightforward.

How would I describe their sound? Well, it's dark and meditative, focusing on unconventional guitar riffs that sound dirty in a good way, though at times they seem to drift and drag on for too long, but it's all part of the band finding their feet. Moreover, the vocalist has a unique voice, not a great one by traditional standards, but his vocals freewheel between wailing, droning and shouting adding the compelling soundscapes the band builds. And that's what this band are: compelling. And if, for some reason, you don't find them to be compelling, at the very least you'll find them to be challenging.

"They Aren't ALL Beautiful" opens with 40-seconds of the same drum and guitar pattern that's later repeated throughout the song, though it's not exactly 'melodic' but it's likely to become a firm favourite with your subconscious and eventually draw you in to humming it along for days. "A Young Boy Forgets About Heaven" is a particular high point, again, featuring repetitive guitar patterns which will, again, seep their way into your mind, and at one stage there is a riff which bears strong resemblance to "After The Devil Beats His Wife" by Emery. One negative point I must add is that the habit they have of repeating guitar-lines over and over in most songs doesn't exactly help towards distinguishing between songs, and doesn't suggest a tremendous amount of creativity, either.

You'll have to be patient with this release, because upon first listen it may sound like a bit of a distorted mess. However, if you listen to it enough you'll be rewarded, you'll pick up on the subtle nuance in the music, which I could have talked about, but it would act almost like a spoiler does for a film, and nobody wants that. "In The Nervous Light of Coincidence" will stick out in your music library like a sore-thumb (sorry for the cliché), but it's one you'll be pleased to have nonetheless. [7½]
Download: They Aren't ALL Beautiful, A Young Boy Forgets About Heaven, Tomorrow's On An Antique Wall
For Fans of: These Arms Are Snakes, Twelve Hour Turn, Hot Cross
Listen: Myspace

Release Date 04.03.2008
Torque/Victory Records

Link: http://www.rockfreaks.net/index.php?page=albumreviews&id=2201
PS - Emery? For those in the dark, like me, the band hail from Vancouver, Canada and have 'a tendency towards prog-like time changes and heavy riffing', or so they proclaim on their myspace anyway.

'In The Nervous Lights Of Coincidence' is a decent record. I like that it's dark and brooding and has some handy guitar work and I like that it doesn't just play up to various trends and fashions - this is a particularly untrendy album, and I say that as a compliment. At times it does tend to brood and drift a little too much, but the better songs, such as 'A Thousand Miles Connects', are riffy affairs that will appeal to people who like bands such as These Arms Are Snakes.

It's something a bit different anyway - it sticks out like a sore thumb in my review pile for not having too many choruses and melodies, and at times that's a very good thing.

LINK: http://www.punktastic.com/reviews/3400

» Listen on Myspace

April 2008 - Jakartah on the Interview Show-90.1FM]

Vancouver is a city full of contrasts. Some of the most stunning natural beauty sits right beside a burgeoning metropolis with one of the most notorious slums in North America. Apparently Vancouver doesn’t want the rest of the world to see the ugly side of this beautiful city so close to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Ah, local bands… I haven’t done a lot of interviews with local bands. There is a reason for this. In short, I became good phone-friends with Richie’s ex-girlfriend because I would call her every week trying to reach Richie. It was a particularly sad exchange when his ex tearfully told me that Richie and she had broken up and now there would be no reason for me and her to chat anymore.

LINK: http://winniecooper.net/tag/jakartah/

Jakartah "In the Nervous Lights of Coincidence" CD
Posted on Monday, October 12th, 2009 @ 7:10 am » permalink

"In the Nervous Lights of Coincidence" is the debut full-length from intriguing Canadian trio Jakartah, and though it seems to have been released a year-and-a-half ago, the band is still promoting it fairly heavily. Perhaps that's because their label, Torque Records, has no mention of Jakartah anywhere that I can find on their MySpace page, but I'm not really sure what's going on there!? Regardless, the band emailed me about checking out the album, and I liked it, so… here we go. Apparently these guys have been compared to a lot of bands or styles that they feel have no real bearing on their sound or influences, and I fear I'll likely continue that trend, but what can you do, you know? To be honest, though, the only band Jakartah reminds me of is another odd contemporary outfit that I've written about in the past, and that's Robots and Empire. Both bands have this strange overall aesthetic that combines post-hardcore leanings with lightly prog-ish, almost "stoner rock" sounding characteristics – though Jakartah's take often heads in a more angular direction. (For the record, I still fucking hate the term "stoner rock", and it can be misleading, but I'm strictly referring to its textural musical qualities, nothing to do with subject matter or imagery.) Here fuzzy chord progressions and weird little rocked out riffs with underlying noise rock types of arrangements weave around dense basslines and subtly filtered vocals that are mixed a little farther back than usual, which creates an interested aesthetic as it is. But then all of this is punctuated by indie-esque clean passages and emphatic melodies, creating a truly unique approach that defies categorization in the best way possible. I'm really preferring to let the music do the talking lately, so here's a taste:
Jakartah "Reactions Begin Grinding Gears Tonight"

In an effort to spread their music to as many listeners as possible, the band has also made the album available for free download through their blog:

[DOWNLOAD] Jakartah "In the Nervous Lights of Coincidence" (@ Mediafire, via Blogspot)

However, if you like what you hear and wish to support Jakartah's efforts with a purchase, which is obviously encouraged, here are but a few sources to get you started…

Purchase:

@ Interpunk (CD)
@ RevHQ (CD)
@ Amazon.com (mp3)
@ iTunes (mp3)

LINK: http://www.aversionline.com/blahg/2009/10/12/jakartah-in-the-nervous-lights-of-coincidence-cd/

Listen To This Once [Oh, Canada pt.2] Review

Even though this band is a recent find for me, they are from Canada, so I will include them in my ongoing “Oh, Canada!” series. Also, they are fucking great, so why not show people another awesome Canadian band?

After much pondering, I think I have come up with a short description of this band, and more specifically this album, that is at least mostly accurate. Jakartah sound like a more riffy Jawbox, or a heavier Burning Airlines, with a singer that sort of sounds like the singer of Young Widows. Weird right? Haha. Please give it a listen and let me know what you think. I recommend it to any fans of Jawbox and other good post hardcore bands in that vein. And though I’m not sure if fans of Young Widows would like it, I still say at least give it a listen. Cause you never know. This is the Vancouver band’s first and only full length. It’s also kind of amazing, considering they released stuff of this caliber right off the bat.

-matthew st.

Personal Album Highlights:

-A Young Boy Forgets About Heaven

-Rosa Unida drinks Anxiety

-A Thousand Miles Connects You To Me

-Liaisons At The Woodward Building

Link: http://listentothisonce.blogspot.com/2009/01/oh-canada-part-2-jakartah-in-nervous.html

REPLAY: JAKARTAH w/ DJ Jonathan Brown on CiTR

We had a blast yesterday afternoon.
